It is traditionally made of metal or pottery, with fruits and vegetables spilling out of the horn. The word "cornucopia" comes from the Latin cornu copiae, meaning "horn of plenty." In mythology, it was said that Zeus gave Athena a magical goat-skin bag (another name for this type of container) which never ran out no matter how much food was put inside it! The image above shows an ancient Roman statue depicting a deity holding such a bag over his shoulder; he's surrounded by animals representing different types of produce: grapes for wine, apples for cider...and even eggs! A cornucopia was often placed at the center of a table during Thanksgiving to symbolize abundance and plenty. This tradition began in ancient Rome, where it was common for people to place an upturned goat-skin bag filled with fruit or vegetables on their dining room tables during celebrationsThe cornucopia was a symbol of fertility and abundance in ancient Greece. Allen's Flowers Thanksgiving, one of the favorites among holidays will be here in two weeks. We invite you to shop with Allen'sĀ Flowers and create a festive holiday atmosphere in your home with our elegant flowers and gifts. Our world class floral designers have produced some of the most elegant holiday spirited floral products you will find. Thanksgiving evolved in 1621. As we all know from our history studies, it was a bitterly cold winter after the Pilgrims first landed in America. They were able to survive by the generosity of the Native Americans that shared food with them. To repay their new friends, the Pilgrims held a three-day feast. The bounty they shared included dried fruits, boiled pumpkin, turkey, venison and other foods. A slightly different menu from what we are accustomed to but no doubt a delightful feast at that time. Over the many years the theme of a celebration of harvest has continued to evolve. Today we think of Thanksgiving as a time to give thanks for our foundation of this great Nation. Of course, it is also the official start of the holiday season and a special time of fellowship with family and friends. After receiving encouragement from some people, President Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a nationwide holiday in 1863. As many people will be traveling and or hosting the Thanksgiving Day meal, there are guidelines to contemplate according to the CDC.Ā  Some of their modified guidelines from last year are: Protect those not yet eligible for vaccination such as young children by getting yourself and other eligible people around them vaccinated. Wear well-fitting masks over your nose and mouth if you are in public indoor settings if you are not fully vaccinated. Even those who are fully vaccinated [...]

Thanksgiving Decorating Ideas

Thanksgiving will be here in a few weeks, so it's good to start planning your decor for that special family gathering. It's a time to show gratitude and reflect on a year that has been challenging but that has shown us what we should value most. Here, in San Diego, the weather is starting to change but we are still fortunate to have sunny days even with the cooler temperatures. The weather can make it possible to even consider hosting a Thanksgiving meal on a patio or deck outdoors. Our San Diego flower shop offers a wide range of floral designs for this year's Thanksgiving celebration. Here are some of their ideas for how you can decorate your home, table, and space for Thanksgiving. Cornucopias Let's start with one of the most traditional types of Thanksgiving centerpieces: the cornucopia. Also known as the horn of plenty, the cornucopia is a symbol of the prosperity of the harvest and a reminder of how much all of us have in terms of the wealth our family and friends offer us. Our San Diego flower shops and website offer a wide range of cornucopia designs to fit your home. This includes a traditional rustic and harvest theme replete with sunflowers, mini pumpkins, wheat, and bold colors. You can also go with a more elegant cornucopia that includes burgundy roses, purple and pink flowers, and cream accents. Thanksgiving Centerpieces You can also opt to add centerpieces to your dining table, buffet table, coffee table, or even your foyer table to welcome guests into your home. Again, coordinate the colors of your centerpieces to match your color scheme and decor style. You don't have to stick with the traditional orange and yellow hues of Thanksgiving pasts. [...]
