Otay Ranch is a town and census-designated place (CDP) in San Diego County, California. The population was 7,279 at the 2010 census. It lies on State Route 54 and is a suburb of San Diego.

Otay Ranch History:

The area was originally known as Rancho Cañada de los Coches (Valley of the Wagon). In 1881, John D. Spreckels built his home on his ranch called “Otay”, which means “little otter” in Spanish. This later became known as Spreckels Springs and then as Lakeview when a post office was established there; it was eventually changed back to Otay Rancho when the post office closed in 1914.

Otay Ranch is a census-designated place (CDP) in San Diego County, California.  The community is named after the rancho of the same name. The community of Otay Ranch is located along the southern side of Interstate 805 and extends from just south of the Mexico–United States border to I-805’s interchange with State Route 94 (SR 94). The neighborhood of O’Farrell lies to its west; Southcrest is to its east; and Jamacha lies across SR 94 to its north. It is part of Unified School District (USD) East County.

In 1884 an effort to establish a town at the springs failed due to lack of water resources, but by 1890 an adequate supply had been acquired through pipes from Mission Valley. The city was incorporated on June 11, 1911 with 3,000 people living within its boundaries at the time. The name “Otay” comes from the Kumeyaay Indians who lived there. While it may have meant “place of many flowers,” it also could have meant “place where we go to get water.”

In 1848, when California became part of the United States after the Mexican-American War, most of what is now Chula Vista belonged to Juan Bandini. In 1853 he sold 6,000 acres (24 km2) to William Heath Davis who established a sheep ranch and began land development in an area known as La Media Luna (Half Moon). In 1872 he sold 3,000 acres (12 km2) to John Percival Wolfskill who later changed it to Rancho de la Nación with his brother George Washington Wolfskill.
