Celebrate Creativity on Floral Design Day

There is so much to be said for creativity and what it can do to lift spirits, motivate people, and create joy. One group of artists that we celebrate each year are floral designers. Our floral designers are everything to us here in San Diego. We love them and what they do so much because we see what they are able to do for the recipients of their artwork. About Floral Design Day Floral Design Day was created by Carl Rittner, the founder of the Rittners School of Floral Design in Boston. He was considered to be a pioneer in floral art education. While he started the initiative, it was Governor William Weld of Massachusetts that created the day in 1995. National Floral Design Day was then established on February 28th as a way to recognize the art of floral design and appreciate its history. Across cultures and time, floral design has been considered to be an important cultural art form. Celebrating Floral Design Day In celebrating it, our San Diego flower shops recognize and reward our floral design teams. We appreciate that many customers also drop by or send messages to our floral designers, too, not to mention come by for a bouquet or order online. We can also celebrate Floral Design Day through painting, planting flowers, using floral motifs in textiles or other mediums, and creating a bouquet. It may even involve taking a floral design class to understand the depth of artistry that goes into this craft. You can also use social media to share awareness about Floral Design Day, including using the hashtag, #FloralDesignDay, and sharing your favorite floral design pictures. How to Care For Orchids

Orchids are one of our favorite blooming plants to offer. They are elegant, colorful, and exotic. While they appear delicate, these blooming plants are hardy and can last a long time with just minimal care. There are more than 20,000 types of orchids available, so it would be hard to imagine not finding one that you like. If anything, it's hard to narrow down one to select for your home or as a gift.Ā Orchids serve as a symbol for many things, including love, elegance, and fertility. Ā  The most popular orchids we offer in our San Diego flower shop include theĀ phalaenopsis and dendrobium. These bloom one to two times a year with a bloom that can last about a month. If you buy an orchid for yourself or you receive one as a gift, here are some tips on how to care for an orchid so they enjoy a long life. Container and Soil Make sure to use a container or pot that provides plenty of drainage, including drainage holes to let excess water drain away from the orchid plant. Orchids should Ā be put in a container with fast-draining soil. This type of social is either a moss-based or bark-based potting mix. The bark-based mix allows water to drain the fastest. Ā  Temperature and Light Orchids grow best in temperatures between 60 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. They don't need much air circulation, but orchids do need a lot of indirect light. Ā They do well when placed near aĀ south- or east-facing window. Water Ā  Watering frequency depends on humidity levels and climate where the orchid will live. Typically, you need to water an orchid every few days. Just be careful to not overwater them because root rot is a common effect. Ā Ā  [...]

What’s Appropriate to Send For a Funeral?

It can be hard to know what to do when someone you know loses a loved one. Now, with the current situation and inability to hold public gatherings to recognize that loss, it may seem even more difficult to find a way to express your love and sympathy. However, there are many types of gifts that can be appropriate to send for a funeral or as a sympathy message.Ā  Here are some ideas that offer a way to show you care and are thinking of your friends, family members, neighbors or colleagues during this tough time: Contribution/Gift of Money It's always nice to make a contribution in the name of the deceased to an organization or charity that was important to them or their loved ones. Often, the family will share this information as part of the funeral arrangements. In certain situations where there is a sudden or unexpected loss, there may be a need to get financial assistance. Now, many people can start crowdfunding events like GoFundMe pages. If this is an option, you can post a comforting note and make a donation. Personalized Gifts Depending on how close you are to the deceased's family, it may be nice to send a framed photo or flip book of memories you had with that person and their loved ones. It can be a comfort and joy for when the family is ready to focus on those joyous moments.Ā  Food Gifts It may also be appropriate to send some type of food gift like a basket of food items or food delivery service. This can help when a family may be struggling to cope. Having pre-made food can ensure they still eat well. You may also want to drop off your own [...]

Determining Which Flowers are Appropriate for Certain Occasions

While flowers are always a matter of personal preference in terms of variety and color, there are some good guides that can help you if you are not sure if a particular flower might be better for certain occasions. Here is a guide plus some examples from our floral design collection available through our online flower shop and all of our San Diego florist locations. Anniversary Focus on colors like pink and red, which represent love and passion. Itā€™s best to stay away from yellow as it represents friendship. Of course, if your love happens to like yellow, then it is okay. Flower choices can include roses, iris, and lilies. Lavish Love featureTop of Forms red roses and spray roses along with pink Asiatic lilies in a stylish glass vase. Birthday This is the time for fun, festive colors that are bright. You can pick the birth flower for the recipientā€™s birthday month, such as larkspur for July and gladiolus for August or just simply get what you know your loved one enjoys. Happy Birthday Tulips and Balloons features a bright display of tulips in many hues along with a 'Happy Birthday' Mylar balloon. Funeral and Sympathy For funerals, blue, white, and green represent calmness and peach while orange and red is a way to celebrate life. Some flower choices include chrysanthemums, lilies, and roses. For sympathy, lilies, daisies, and roses are nice. However, if the sympathy flowers or funeral flowers are for a Jewish recipient, it is best not to give flowers because these are deemed inappropriate. Loving Lilies and Roses is a beautiful way to send your love and best wishes. It includes crĆØme roses, white Oriental lilies, carnations, eucalyptus and more hand arranged in a container. Get Well [...]
