The Larkspur ā€“ Julyā€™s Flower

Just like birthstones, there are certain flowers that are attributed to certain months of the year. The month of July is represented by the Larkspur. This blog post provides some background information about the larkspur and offers some floral arrangements that feature this beautiful July flower. All about the Larkspur Here are some interesting facts to help you get to know the Larkspur: It is a member of the buttercup family. These complex flowers come in a multitude of colors, including red, pink, white, blue, and violet. They are irregularly shaped and bloom in vertical groupings with petals and sepals. Their tall spikes make them a popular choice for cut flower arrangements. These are fragile, short-lived flowers when kept in a vase. The Larkspur plant is actually toxic with stems and seeds that contain alkaloids. Larkspur Flower Arrangements Our floral design team at each of our San Diego flower shops loves to use the Larkspur in their floral designs. Here are some of our favorite flower arrangements with Larkspur: Garden Celebration: This abundant and colorful flower arrangement looks like a garden in full bloom. It is bursting with two feet of fresh flowers, including pink lilies, light purple lisianthus, purple hydrangea and pink roses. The flower arrangement also contains a balanced amount of greenery arranged in a tall glass vase. Sweet San Diego: This larger-than-life flower arrangement is a grand display of pink Oriental lilies, tulips, larkspur, gerberas, white hydrangea, hot pink raunculus, lavender and red roses, purple Monte Casino asters and stock along with greenery displayed in a clear glass hurricane vase. Celebrating the Fourth of July with Flowers

Beyond flags, fireworks, and streamers, the Fourth of July is a reminder of our freedom as a nation and as individuals. It is a special holiday that is often celebrated with parades, parties, and picnics. This makes it a great opportunity to use flowers as part of the decorations and enjoy the natural beauty all around us. Decorating with Flowers The beauty of flowers is that they often can become the decorations thanks to their colorful and patriotic color palette. This includes many flowers in red and white, including roses, carnations, lilies, daisies and tulips. Flowers can also be dyed blue to add to the patriotic palette of Fourth of July flower arrangements. Of course, not all flowers have to be red, white, and blue to befit an Independence Day bash. You can use vases and ribbons in red, white, and blue as well as add pinwheels or miniature firework rockets or stars on sticks within the patriotic flower arrangements. Flowers for All Types of Fourth of July Celebrations There are many places to add flowers on the Fourth of July: Party centerpieces; Picnic table displays; Flower garlands; Hanging baskets on streets or porches; Wreaths and standing displays for cemeteries; and Float decorations. Fourth of July Flower Care Of course, Fourth of July is one of the hottest times of the year even here in San Diego. Therefore, you want to make sure that your flower arrangements for Fourth of July can withstand the heat, sunlight, and humidity. Before the event, keep the flowers in a cool, dark place or at least out of direct sunlight. Make sure the flowers also receive enough fresh water and flower food to keep them nourished so they can look their freshest when on display. [...]

The Proper Gift for a Holiday Host or Holiday Hostess

Chances are this holiday season you will find yourself at a holiday party or two -- maybe more. These parties, whether mature and classy or with endings that mirror a crazy night, had a host or hostess that put a lot of thought and effort into the event. Whether it is a group or individual who slaved away for hours in an attempt to make everything perfect and right at their holiday party, if you have already gone or have yet to go, then be sure to find a way to thank them properly. There are many ways to do this though most typically one brings a gift of sorts to the party for the host or hostess. At Allenā€™s Flowers and Plants, we have a few of the perfect gifts in mind. Selecting the Right Gift You donā€™t want to come off wrong when giving a gift to a host or hostess. For the hostess, the gift should not be intimate but more of something along the lines of casual. Weā€™ve put together a few good host or hostess gift ideas below to make it a bit easier for you: Wine is a fine gift and can be quite affordable. This drink is obviously for an adult hostess and if you plan ahead you can pick up a bottle that helps complement the meal that will be served at the party. Wine is fine but liquor is quicker. Seriously though at some party bringing a bottle of the hostessā€™s favorite poison is sure to make her smile. Of course, not all gifts have to be so adult. Chocolate makes a great gift too. Just about everyone loves chocolate and so for the most part you really canā€™t go wrong with [...]

The Many Faces of the Chrysanthemum

The November birth flower is the Chrysanthemum. Like birthstones, birth flowers represent the month in which someone was born. They are often associated with superstitious beliefs and generally the meaning of these stones and, in this case flowers, is associated with oneā€™s personality. At Allenā€™s Flowers and Plants, we believe that the Chrysanthemum flower would make a delightful gift to anyone with a November birthday but in taking its meaning to heart, it would serve others just as well, too. The flower is beautiful, being first discovered in a gold color but is also known to grow in white and red. The Origin of the Chrysanthemum The flower was first used in China well over a few hundred years ago. It was used in culinary for mixed greens and other salad like dishes as well as made into a tea. It has even been made into a type of rice wine as the Chrysanthemum flower is known for its sweet taste and aroma. Unlike other sweet things though, the Chrysanthemum flower is also known for its effectiveness as a strong insect repellant as well as killer. The Color and Meaning Throughout history, we have associated colors with meanings. For example, red has stood for passion, which has meant love and, at times, also represented bloodshed and war. With the Chrysanthemum flower, a red colored bud like many other red flowers, symbolizes love. The white represents truth and the yellow a slight love. The Chrysanthemum flower in general though represents optimism and joyfulness. According to the meaning of the Chrysanthemum, a person who is born in November should be all of those things, but at Allenā€™s Flowers and Plants we feel that others can be those things too. So, while the flower [...]

Shake Their Hand: Celebrating Veteranā€™s Day

Veteranā€™s Day is upon us and we believe it is ever important to give our thanks to Americaā€™s servicemen and women for their endless sacrifice. Allenā€™s Flowers and Plants believe that no Veteran should go unloved ever and to know that so many are suffering on this side of the states pains us greatly. No man or woman should be alone after serving for this country for when they did from that moment on and to eternity they became our family. Every one of us owes them for what they have done, keeping freedom free and protecting our friends and families. To every veteran we say, thank you for your service to our nation and her people. A History of the Holiday Veterans Day was first celebrated at the end of World War 1 on the 11th hour of the 11th day in the 11th month of the year 1918. Like Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, Veterans Day is celebrated to commemorate and decorate our military to thank them for their time, service and sacrifice in keeping this nation and her values alive. We share the belief of others that not a single veteran should ever feel alone after serving to protect our lives and freedoms. Celebrate and Thank Chances are you know someone who has served in the military or is serving in the military. While they probably know just how much you care for them and thank them for doing what so many others could not, this Veterans Day, be sure to remind them of how much they mean to you. There are many ways one can go about this, too. If they live far away, be sure to write them, call them, or send them a little something [...]

A Lighthearted Election: Itā€™s Time to Vote and Agree to Disagree

Is it fantasy to believe that a lighthearted presidential election could be at all possible? Perhaps you might think so, but it wasnā€™t that long ago it seems that people went around having a little more respect for others and their beliefs. Before, it seemed to us that, while we all might have in the end sided with one side or another, most of the time we stood in the middle supporting various parts of each political party. It seems impossible for one side to just go and get everything right. So, yes it is safe to say that a more lighthearted Election Day is very much an achievable effort. We All Have Views It is important to remember that every one of us has our own views and is entitled to our own opinions on all matters and on goings in this country and its politics. Just because someone thinks differently or votes for one party over another, it does not mean they are the ā€˜enemyā€™; they are a person too and, just like you, they have their reasons. As we close in on Election Day, chances are you are going to continue to see more and more people expressing their views on these matters and they may not be your own. Just remember to be polite about it and hope that your emphasis on kindness and respect rubs off on them as well and just maybe Election Day will be a little less tense. Itā€™s Just a Day, But Make it Count! At Allenā€™s Flowers and Plants, we want to stress this in a couple of ways. Try not to get so worked up over the elections. Cast your vote (please vote responsibly) and then wait it out to [...]

Fall is Here: Great Ways to Enjoy the Season

Fall began on September 23, 2012 and changes are already noticeable. The temperature is starting to drop and the leaves show signs that they are changing color. Autumn is a beautiful time of the year and arguably the perfect time of the year to be outside whether it is for a football game or just a walk or bicycle ride. We are going to talk about fall traditions today, and these are not the normal ā€˜holidayā€™ traditions that everyone does, but something more intimate and meant to be a tradition for your family. In this blog, we are going to discuss some great ideas for celebrating fall and some even better giftideas for the countless birthdays and couple holidays that are coming your way. Celebrating the Fall Season Fall still means that you can enjoy the woods, park, the local fishing spot and, of course, the backyard for games and maybe even a cookout or two. So what else can you do with your family to celebrate the beauty of the changing seasons? A picnic, of course! Sure everyone does them and it isnā€™t all that unique, but just think about how you can take them to a favorite spot or check out a few different spots over time. Bring a kite, a football, or even a fishing pole if there is a pond and it is allowed. Another tried and true family tradition is the big game. If you and your family love football (or any sport really), why not have a family game? You can even get friends in on it to make the teams bigger. It will be good active fun and a way to turn the season into ongoing social events. Of course, there are many ways [...]
